An Ant Collage

Multiples of One

Found in Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park, this ant was gallivanting around the picnic table  where I was ‘suiting-up’ for a hike into the valley. She obligingly popped into my white studio where she acted suitably enraged for the camera. James Glasier has identified it as one of the Formica rufa group, the wood ants, tentatively Formica obscuriventris. I translate that as “Ant with hidden bum”, but I am sure that someone will correct me on this…

See pictures  of Formica obscuriventris at Alex Wild Photography.

And visit F. obscuriventris at AntWeb.

This looks like a How-To-Do-the-Rumba pamphlet for ants who wish to learn to dance. Nice!

Thanks Biobabbler! I imagine it looked like I was doing a bizarre dance myself, trying to keep this lass in focus!
