In the shadows

Tucked away in the shadows of the garden’s giant fleece flowers, a goldenrod crab spider (Misumena vatia, Clerck 1757) rests beneath its exuvia. In this delicate teneral state, it is important that the spider remain hidden from predators and (if bashful) roving bug photographers.

To accentuate this private moment, I used the small Canon 270EX II flash mounted on a cord and hand-held at an angle behind the resting spider.
